Why was Oil explored prior to its first discovery?

Most search can reveal history of oil exploration, the dates, the countries, etc. What I really want to know is why oil was explored on the first place prior to the first discovery? What was its uses then prior to invention of petrol-fed machineries like automobiles? For sure, automobiles wouldn't have been invented without gas first being discovered.
